China Expected to Dominate Asia’s Small-Scale LNG Liquefaction Capacity Additions

China Expected to Dominate Asia’s Small-Scale LNG Liquefaction Capacity Additions

China to dominate Asia’s small-scale LNG liquefaction capacity additions between 2022 and 2026

According to the recent statistics and global analysis, it is expected that China will dominate Asia's small-scale LNG liquefaction capacity additions, which will contribute 99 percent of the capacity additions between 2022 and 2026. Also, China is expected to witness a total capacity addition of 3,810 thousand tonnes per annum (ktpa); most would be from new build projects.

It is reported that about six new-build small-scale LNG liquefaction projects are likely to begin their operation by 2026 in China. Out of six-four are planned with identified development plans, while the other two are early-stage announced projects. Among these, the Xi'an terminal is the largest new-build small-scale LNG liquefaction project in the country, with a capacity of 1,400 ktpa. It is followed by Jiaxing, with a capacity of 1,000 ktpa.

Countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam will also play a big part in contributing to the remaining capacity additions in Asia by 2026. Bhola is the terminal accounting for the small-scale LNG liquefaction capacity of 30 ktpa in Bangladesh. Ho Chi Minh is the only terminal accounting for the entire small-scale LNG liquefaction capacity of 10 ktpa in Vietnam.
